              Jonas Ketterle

Jonas crafts unsweetened ceremonial grade cacao that is used in cacao ceremonies globally. After first encountering sipping chocolate in Oaxaca Mexico in 2012, Jonas founded Firefly Chocolate in 2014, with the mission of inspiring awe and wonder through cacao. He initially launched 85 percent dark chocolate in a variety of flavors, sweetened with low glycemic coconut sugar. He also pioneered a bio-regional wild harvested chocolate bar, celebrating bay nuts, a food used by the native peoples of the SF Bay Area. By 2018 he began shifting his focus entirely to ceremonial cacao and has shared his cacao in ceremony with many.

Jonas goes by he/his, and he identifies as a first generation American, having immigrated from Germany at 4 years old,  He grew up in Boston, land of the Massachusetts people, and lives in Northern California, occupied land of the Nisenan people.

              Sena Shellenberger

              Sena Shellenberger

Sena worked at Google pioneering their hardware projects for 5 years before discovering cacao in a ceremony in Mexico in 2015. She eventually left her corporate job which led to travels in Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Belize to deepen her connection with cacao. She joined the Firefly team in 2018 after teaching many about ceremonial cacao through her online courses and in addition to her marketing support for Firefly, continues to lead ceremonies, retreats, and workshops on cacao stewardship.

Sena goes by she/hers, and identifies as half-Mexican and half-European. She grew up in the land of the Dakota Sioux, now called Minnesota, and lives in Northern California, occupied land of the Nisenan people.

              General FAQs

These general FAQs apply to both of our courses. Be sure to scroll down for FAQs specific to each course. If you have questions about our Payment Plans & Scholarships, see our Payment Plan FAQs here.

Q: I’ve never done an online course before, how should I prepare?

A: We know new things can be a little intimidating, which is why we wanted to offer this course live so we can interact with you directly and create a safe container for you to explore with cacao.

              Set the space

              • Ideally, you can be in a private space and dedicate this time to self-study. You can create a nourishing space with pillows, candles, and other meaningful items, or keep it simple.  We recommend having a dedicated notebook & pen for your work with cacao. Also water, tea or maybe even some cacao to sip on during class can be nice.
              • Since this will be via your laptop or phone, you will want to make sure your devices are charged or that you have a charging cord and outlet nearby. You can prop your computer or phone up in a chair or with books to allow for easeful watching and typing without hurting your neck or back. You may also want headphones.

Q: I’ve never done an online course before... what's it like?

A: We decided to use an online format so we can connect with you via your smartphone or computer, no matter where you are in the world. The course will be offered weekly for 90-minutes, and you will have homework (or lovework, as we prefer to call it) outside of the weekly class.

You can imagine it like FaceTime or Skype video chat, but with a larger group, the ability to type in questions, and you can also turn your own video or audio off if you want privacy. Essentially, it's like connecting with a lot of awesome people from all over the world in the comfort of your own home!

Q: What is the time commitment required each week?

A: The cool thing about this course is that a big part of your homework, or what we call lovework,  will be to create ritual space to connect with yourself and cacao at some point in your day, so the course has built-in #selfcare time. In addition to the 90-minute classes 2x/week, we will provide video, reading and journaling lovework that could take an additional 30-60 minutes. Think of this as a cacao immersion!

Q: Where does this content come from? Is there a specific lineage that you have studied with?

A: We believe that cacao ritual is the art of engaging in sacred relationship with the cacao plant. In the Western context, this is a relatively new phenomenon, as people seek a deeper relationship with cacao beyond that which the “candy” chocolate industry offers. Cacao is an incredible guide for re-connecting people to their own ritual practices, as we believe that ritual is natural to all humans, and fundamental to our ability to survive and thrive in right relationship with the earth, the elements, and each other.

We do not claim any relationship between the modern cacao rituals we offer and ancient or indigenous practices of cacao ceremony. Rather, we seek inspiration by looking to:

              • Our ancestors' practices of ceremony and ritual
              • Ancient and modern indigenous world views and understandings of medicinal plants
              • Our present day connection to the ecosystems that we live in and are a part of
              • Embodied traditions of yoga, breathwork, song and dance

Sena and Jonas together developed the concept of cacao stewardship as a way to create informed cacao lovers with a grounded understanding of the history and present day context of how cacao impacts indigenous communities. The cacao stewardship framework is the result of frequent personal study with cacao for over seven years, on the ground visits with cacao farmers and cooperatives, and anti-oppression work studying decolonization and cultural appropriation.

Q: I live in a country outside of the U.S. and the class times don’t work for me. Is there a different class time that I could join?

A: We hear you! We are offering the recorded option of the foundational course that you may watch at a time that is convenient for you. We hope to offer more class times in the future.

Meet Cacao & Develop Your Personal Practice FAQs

Q: I really want to join this course but the time doesn’t work for me!

A: We hear you! You can still join the course even if you are unable to attend live. We offer a recorded version of the course for a discounted rate that you can select before adding the course to your cart. All of the classes will be recorded and e-mailed to you so you can watch them anytime.

Q: I’m brand new to cacao… is this course right for me?

A: Yes! This course is a foundational overview of working with ceremonial cacao. We cover the basics of what ceremonial cacao is, how it is beneficial for us, the history of it, how it’s made, the social impact it has on local and global economies, and more! One of our main intentions for this course is to familiarize you with creating your own cacao rituals. You will learn how to connect with your intuition and develop a relationship with cacao as a supportive plant ally in your life.

Even if you have a strong connection with cacao, this course will provide in-depth content around history and current traditions including footage from our stays with the cacao farming communities in Belize, Guatemala and Tanzania. This course sets the stage for empowering cacao stewards that have a well-rounded and cohesive understanding of how ceremonial cacao impacts us personally and collectively.

Q: Does this course cover how to facilitate group cacao ceremonies?

A: The foundational information provided in this course is important for anyone planning to share cacao in group ceremonies. In class 5 we cover topics such as how to know when you are ready to share cacao with others, and provide some helpful tips for getting started sharing cacao and working your way up to larger group offerings. Our level two course Steward The Medicine: Cacao Ceremony Facilitator Training is our advanced course to deepen your practice as a cacao facilitator. The first course is a pre-req for our second level course.

Q: Do I have to drink cacao to be a part of the course?

A: While it’s not required to drink cacao during our live classes, drinking cacao regularly throughout the course will help you to deepen your relationship with cacao. We will be offering homework and ritual suggestions for you to try throughout the 3 weeks.

We recommend stocking up before the class starts so you don’t run out during the course!

Q: What’s the difference between the recorded course vs the live course options?

A: For our foundational course we are offering a less involved option where you can watch the recordings of our live courses. This gives you the benefit of watching the videos on your own schedule while saving some money. The recorded option is best for you if you are a more independent learner and will be okay not asking live questions or interacting with other students much throughout the course. The live version of the course is best for those who want to engage with Jonas & Sena live to have their questions answered. In the live version of the course you also will interact with other students during the live cacao ceremony and in class.

Steward The Medicine: Cacao Ceremony Facilitator Training FAQs

Q: I really want to join this course but the time doesn’t work for me!

A: We hear you! While all of the classes will be recorded and e-mailed to you so you can watch them anytime, for this advanced level course we feel that you will receive the most out of your investment if you are able to join at least 80% of the courses live. Much of the curriculum is experiential in our live cacao ceremonies and will come from the live connections created in our classes. Stay tuned via our newsletter for our next offering of this course - we’ll be offering them once a quarter.

Q: Do I get a certificate upon completion of this course?

A: We are not offering this as a certification program, because sharing cacao is a heart calling that only you can hear and know. Our intention for this course is to share best practices and learn from each other to raise the bar in the quality of cacao ceremonies and healing experiences people have all over the world. We (Jonas & Sena) won’t be evaluating you or judging the quality of your offerings and we envision this more as a council space for sharing and learning from each other.

Q: I’m brand new to cacao… is this course right for me?

A: We recommend our foundational course Meet Cacao: Develop Your Personal Practice, first :)

Q: Do I have to take your foundational course before this one?

A: Yes, because the content for the second course builds on what's shared in the first course. If you feel that it will be a repeat of content for you (i.e. you've traveled to cacao farms and are familiar with the way cacao is made, understand the complexities of having a positive social impact with cacao, and have been immersed in the cacao world for a while) you can fill out this form to share about your experience and we will be in touch.

Q: Do I have to drink cacao to be a part of the course?

A: While it’s not required to drink cacao during our live classes, we will have multiple cacao ceremonies, and ritual practices that will involve drinking cacao, so it will be a large part of the course lovework.

We recommend stocking up before the class starts so you don’t run out during the course!

Q: Do you offer the recorded version of this course like you do for the foundational course?

A: Because this course is mostly experiential in nature with a lot of in class exercises, we are not offering this course via the recorded version. You will get the most value as a participant out of it if you join us live.

Q: How did you arrive at the course price?

A: The course price is the result of personal inquiry & heart-based evaluation of our values. We honor the energy we put in to organize, facilitate, and create the resources for this course. In looking at other online extended learning classes, we feel this offering is a really good value for those wanting to deepen their connections and offerings with cacao. We are distilling years of knowledge into these courses, and a fair monetary exchange for our energy input supports us in our personal well-being and our ability to run our company with sustainable ethical sourcing at the forefront of our values.

One of our company’s primary reasons for existing is the positive social impact we can create through our products. As an independent small business with no outside investors, cash flow is a significant challenge, and the money coming from this course will directly enable us to buy more cacao from the farmers that we work with. Buying more cacao from them has a direct social impact on the farmers’ livelihoods and their communities. It also has a direct positive impact on the local ecosystems as the cacao we purchase is organic and sustainably farmed supporting thriving rainforest habitat. We will soon be releasing our Social Impact Report which offers full transparency into the industry leading prices we offer and the environmental benefit we offer.

Q: The course price is out of my budget, even with the payment plan. Do you offer scholarships?

A: We offer two 50% scholarships for each course each round and we will prioritize the scholarship slots for those that are most impacted by economic injustice. If you would like to apply, we ask that you meaningfully discern your eligibility for this need-based grant. If you are clear that you are ready for this experience and in need of the 50% off scholarship rate, we invite you to send us an email explaining why you’re in need of this scholarship as well as what you’re hoping to learn and achieve as a result of this course: sena@fireflychocolate.com with subject line “Course Scholarship” a minimum of two weeks before the course starts. In the event you do not receive a scholarship, we encourage you to check out our free resources here.

Q: I changed my mind! Can I cancel my registration after signing up?

A: It’s important to us that you are fully committed and invested in the course, and we get that things change. If you cancel over 2 weeks before the course starts you’ll get your money back in full. If you cancel within two weeks of the course start date we will keep 25% in exchange for the administration efforts. Once the course starts there are no refunds.

Q: I have other questions about your courses!

A: Awesome, check out our Course FAQ page here.
