Interconnectedness Meditation
As you sit with cacao, you’re invited to widen the lens of your awareness to all our loving relations that connect us across the globe.
To begin, tidy and energetically cleanse your space for ritual. Have your cup of cacao prepared and have a journal and writing utensil nearby.
Offer gratitude: to the land you are upon, the cacao in your cup, and all those beings who contributed to its presence in your life. Consider where your cacao was grown and reflect upon what you know about these lands (including the plants, animals, peoples). Offer thanks to this network of relationships that enable this cacao to be enjoyed by you in this very moment.
Take a moment to set an intention for deepening your understanding of the beautiful interconnectedness of all life. If you feel inspired to personalize this intention further, please do so.
Before you take your first sip, offer a little cacao to the earth. As you do so, offer a prayer of gratitude that comes from your heart. Consider how the earth holds you, nourishes you, sustains you. Consider the aspects of the earthly element that you feel connected to, and that which you desire to grow into.
From here, take a few deep cleansing breaths, find a comfortable seated position, and notice how the earth supports you. Begin to drink your cacao and with each sip, bring your conscious awareness deeper into the soil (leaving behind a little cacao to offer to the earth at the end).
Imagine that you are able to travel through the layers of soil, rock, silt, and reach the roots beneath you. Discover the weaving of all the plant and tree roots of your area meeting with the vast mycorrhizal fungi network that exists over the entire world. Take some time to explore these interwoven root structures, imaging a vast and endless weaving of partnership that supports and nourishes all life.
Travel upon this network until you find yourself in the roots of the lands that the cacao in your cup is from. Greet the lands and extend your gratitude. Feel the energy of what it means to be connected in this underground web, your consciousness residing in your physical form upon the earth you sit upon - and simultaneously traveling through the vast web underneath you to the lands of origin of your cacao. Spend a few minutes here in this space, just feeling into the sense of connection across the globe and in your own conscious awareness.
When you feel complete, begin to imagine yourself traveling back through this network to arrive back fully in your body where you sit. Once you’ve arrived, take a few deep grounding breaths.
Finally, offer your final sip from your cup to the earth. Imagine that this offering is traveling through the network of roots to where these cacao trees reside, creating a circuit of reciprocity and connection.
Then grab your notebook and write down your reflections from the journey, plus any responses to the following prompts:
- What came up for you in this journey underground?
- What is your relationship with the plants and fungi that make up the underground network that connects us all?
- How does it feel to expand your awareness to the life that exists out of sight?
