Let’s get to know our four Pure 100% Cacaos and how they can support you!
Direct Relationships = PURE Cacaos
A big part of what gets lost in the global supply chain of tropical commodities like cacao is traceability and human relationship.
In fact, big chocolate corporations don’t even know who all their farmers are, because they purchase from such a complex network of middlemen that disconnect them from the farmers.
They may tout third-party certifications like fair trade, but from everything we’ve seen on the ground, “fair trade” requires much more than a price premium.
Just like all humans, our farmers desire to be valued and connected. That’s why we’d rather spend a few nights in the communities we source from, share stories over meals, ask each other every question we can think of about the challenges facing our communities, and bring curiosity about the simple things in each other's day to day lives.
We learn so much from our farmers about cacao and are honored when they trust us enough to share about their spirituality.
With our own eyes, we see the excitement in the young people when they talk about growing cacao.
And they see a bright future for themselves and their families.
That's when we know that, despite centuries of irreparable colonization, our pricing feels honorable. And we’re creating opportunity and a bridge where before there was only disconnection.
Does this human connection impact the quality of our cacao? We absolutely feel it does.
When people love what they do, the energy from that is very tangible.
Direct, Ethical, & Impactful
Our cacao is sourced from 1,000+ small family organic farms in four (and soon to be six!) different countries.
Many of our farmers have direct indigenous roots and wisdom that are invaluable and endangered.
The farms that we source from are small, each just ~0.5 - 5.0 acres in size. We do not source from centralized plantations.
Buying from many small farms has a far more widespread social impact than making a payment to just a single plantation.
And it supports and values traditional ways of life which have been challenging to maintain with the relentless influences of modern civilization.
Buying from small farms also benefits the planet.
These small farmers are almost always important stakeholders in their communities. To them, farming is not only income, but a connection and tending to the land that their children will grow up on and eventually inherit.
So environmental stewardship, organic and often regenerative permaculture, is a defacto choice.
In this kind of system, biodiversity thrives. Some of the cacao forests we’ve walked through are verifiable medicine cabinets and wildlife havens.
So of course, this makes for quality and unique cacao!
There’s no question it’s takes more work and more knowledge to thoughtfully steward a biodiverse ecosystem.
That’s why we pay far above benchmark cacao prices - to support and honor this quality of work.
It’s a reciprocal cycle - our farmers produce better cacao, the environment the cacao is grown in benefits, and we pay them more to support this crucial work.
All of which breaks the cycles of poverty they were stuck in prior, supports their right livelihood, and offers a sustainable alternative to destructive resource extraction.
Win, Win, Win Model
In summary, it's not that a global supply chain is bad. We just have to put the human care and attention back into it.
That’s where the quality is, on the ground and in your cup. So as a result, we see:
- sustainable financial benefit to farming communities
- positive regenerative impact on ecosystems where cacao is grown
- fantastic quality unique cacao that is incomparable to mass-produced plantation-grown cacao
We excited to say that our work keeps gaining more traction. The best practices that we've learned translate to other countries and communities too.
We’re now the sole ceremonial cacao provider offering such a diversity of origins for pure cacaos, and we truly believe this model has a bright future!
