Direct Relationships in Belize
When we visited Punta Gorda right on the Caribbean ocean in the foothills of southern Belize, we had the privilege of staying with several farming families. 75% of the farming families are indigenous Q’eqchi’ and Mopan Maya, and they grow their cacao trees with deep respect and understanding of the local ecology. Their knowledge of the rainforest was impressively vast, as cacao is one of many crops they plant.
Walking through the rainforest with them is like walking through a living medicine cabinet. The farmers will bring home various plants not just for cooking but also to cure injuries and diseases. This intricate knowledge of the forest as a living ecosystem is an essential part of the long-term stewardship of tropical rainforest regions. Many cacao farms are directly adjacent to rainforest preserves.
Social Impact & Community Investment
Additionally, Firefly long-ago invested in a permaculture demonstration farm in Belize to pioneer innovative agroforestry techniques, advance cacao cultivation in the region, and propagate heirloom seedlings.
Because it is very risky for farmers to experiment, this permaculture project demonstrates new techniques first and assures farmers that it’s safe for them to try these new techniques on their farms too. This results in higher-quality cacao for the region
Over the years in Belize, we've seen first-hand the social impact of cacao. We've participated in a social impact audit to examine exactly how farmers' lives are elevated by cacao purchasing. We've also learned about micro-loan programs, such as Kiva and how those loans are administered to farmers, helping them across all areas of their lives.
