Earth, Our Body
There is a well known chant with undetermined authorship that speaks beautifully to the concept of seeing ourselves as nature.
Earth, my body
Water, my blood
Air, my breath
Fire, my spirit
When we chant these words and ponder the correspondences, we recognize the elements as not only what composes the natural world but also what we are made of.
We can see our bodies mirrored in curvatures of the earth’s landscape. We know that about 60% of the human body and about 70% of the planet is water. When we breathe, we are connected to the vast web of air circulating and weaving between all creatures and the atmosphere. The passions of our spirit and the unique soul flame we all carry is reflected in the fire.
We also can see ourselves mirrored in the other creatures of the earth, such as the plants, animals, and minerals. When we observe the growth cycles of plants or the behavior patterns of animals, we can discover more-than-human insight into how to live differently in harmony with the earth. This is also known in some schools as the ‘doctrine of signatures’, which indicates that the physical manifestation of a thing points to its medicine for us.
We recognize the earth as a dynamic being with its own energetic centers (chakras) and functional organs that are extensions of our very self. For instance, the Amazon Rainforest (and home of cacao) is known as the lungs of the planet due to the vast network of trees responsible for recycling the air we breathe.
Truly, there are many ways to view ourselves as not only inhabitants but an extension of the earth we are privileged to call home.

Earth Day Activities
This is the perfect time to take action to give back to our earth mother!
- Celebrate with a cup of ceremonial cacao outdoors & offer your first and final sips to the earth.
- It’s also National Park Week in the US and you can volunteer your time to support the preservation and maintenance of these treasured sites.
- Consider making a donation to an earth-based cause. We recommend our Farmer Climate Resiliency Fund. All proceeds go to support our cacao farmers in the face of natural disasters or climate change.
- Help protect millions of acres of the Amazon in Ecuador from being sold to oil companies through Amazon Frontlines (yes, this is happening in real time)
- Join a local clean up picking up garbage to protect our planet and the health of your communities. Alternately, bring a garbage bag to your neighborhood or outdoor ventures and clean up as you go.
We hope these musings and actionable steps support you in your earth day celebrations!
