Does cacao have caffeine?
Cacao has caffeine (36mg), but its primary stimulant is theobromine (212mg). These two stimulant molecules acting in synergy with cacao's hundreds of other bioactive compounds produce a fundamentally different experience than coffee.
Ceremonial cacao gives a grounded energy boost without the jitters and crash. It's a long lasting, embodied, and gentle energy. This is why so many caffeine sensitive people love drinking cacao to fully or partially replace coffee!
What Is Theobromine? How Does It Differ from Caffeine?
The primary stimulant molecule in cacao is actually theobromine. Ora Cacao has 212mg theobromine per 1oz serving. Theobromine is a mild cardiovascular stimulant, and differs molecularly from caffeine which is a nervous system stimulant. Theobromine is actually blood pressure neutral, because it is also vasodilatory, meaning it relaxes blood vessels simultaneously as stimulating increased blood flow. The improved circulation from cacao is excellent for cardiac health, and improves absorption of the nutrients in cacao and any superfoods it is paired with.
The crash after coffee is largely an adenosine rebound: caffeine blocks adenosine receptors while adenosine continues to build, then floods in when the caffeine clears. Cacao's primary stimulant, theobromine, doesn't work through blocking adenosine receptors, and instead is very beneficial for cerebral blood flow. The difference is so notable with cacao that our founder originally thought for a long time that cacao had no caffeine, until he lost a bet with a friend when he ran a lab test for proof!
Theobromine gives a long lasting, gentle, embodied energy without any sort of jitters or crash, even for sensitive people. Overall, theobromine is only about one quarter as stimulating as caffeine, and it's half-life is roughly 7-10 hours vs. 3–5 hours for caffeine, meaning it's effect on the body is softer and longer for sustained energy.
Caffeine in Ceremonial Cacao vs. Coffee
Both ceremonial cacao and coffee contain caffeine, however 1mg caffeine in coffee is not equivalent to 1mg caffeine in cacao. Here's why.
The cacao butter which makes up 50% of ceremonial cacao massively slows absorption of caffeine into your body, very much similar to having a bullet proof coffee. Additionally, the caffeine in cacao exists in the context of many other neuro-modulators, including anandamide and phenylethylamine which down regulate and balance the caffeine (read more about neurochemistry of cacao here).
Not to mention, there is six times as much theobromine as caffeine in cacao so theobromine becomes the primary effect. This is why cacao is known for grounded, embodied energy compared to the wired alertness of coffee.
For quick reference, here is how ceremonial cacao is different than cacao powder, and here are the theobromine and caffeine values in common drinks:
- Ceremonial cacao: 36mg caffeine, 212mg theobromine
- Single shot espresso: 60-70mg caffeine
- 8oz cup of drip coffee: 90-100mg caffeine
- 8oz cup of black tea: 45-50mg caffeine
In summary, cacao has 1/3 the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee. It sounds like a lot, but cacao has many other compounds slowing absorption, balancing and down-regulating the caffeine.
When Is Coffee Better Than Ceremonial Cacao?
Even though we love ceremonial cacao, sometime a high quality locally roasted coffee is just the right thing.
1) If you are really tired and have just been going hard, often cacao will actually encourage you to rest, because it has many relaxing molecules in it in addition to the stimulating one. If you want to keep going, coffee and caffeine are perfect for masking tiredness. This can be particularly useful if you are traveling and need to adjust time zones by staying up.
2) Caffeine has a very fast onset, and can pick you up quickly and more strongly than cacao. If you need to perform immediately, be super alert for something, or power through a moment of stagnancy, coffee can be just the thing! We love making a ritual of a moment like this, just as we would with a cup of cacao.
3) If you want a delicious cup of coffee or want to participate in the local culture, there's no replacing it! We love coffee shop culture, geeking out with local roasters and on single origins, and we definitely indulge in cappuccino and espresso especially when traveling in Europe.
How and Why to Switch from Coffee to Ceremonial Cacao
You can fully or partially replace coffee with a cup of cacao. You can drink cacao daily, as unlike the depleting properties of coffee, it is super healthy for your body and cardiac system. Cacao is also much more neutral if you are looking for a coffee alternative for acid reflux (as coffee is highly acidic around pH 5). Not to mention, ceremonial cacao has 674–764mg of flavonoids per serving (coffee has none). These are highly beneficial compounds which support cardiovascular health and brain function. Cacao is a natural coffee alternative which can be a great ally for quitting or reducing your dependence on coffee, and introduce you to new benefits you were missing without cacao!
There are several strategies we can recommend:
1) Instead of drinking a straight cup of coffee, start making mochas. You can add about 10 Ora Cacao discs to your hot cup of coffee, and use a milk frother or a blender to mix them in good. This way, you begin slowing down the caffeine spike from pure coffee while still having a delicious drink, and begin introducing the many positive mood and energy regulating effects from cacao.
2) Replace one cup of coffee a day with a cup of ceremonial cacao. For those of you who drink multiple cups of coffee a day, making a slower switch is often an effective strategy. For example you could still drink your morning cup of coffee, but then in the afternoon have a cup of cacao instead of a second cup of coffee. This give you an opportunity to get familiar with how cacao feels, and how nourishing it can be, without interrupting your morning routine.
3) Eliminate coffee entirely with a hard stop transition to cacao. This is especially effective if you just drink one cup of coffee a day. You will likely experience caffeine withdrawal for a few days, but drinking cacao can will actively support you managing symptoms while going through this transition. Many people find after a few weeks they don't miss coffee at all because the balanced energy of cacao is much more supportive of balance in their lifestyle.
Which strategy is right for you, depends both on how much coffee you currently drink, and how badly you want to reduce your caffeine dependency.
How to Prepare Ceremonial Cacao and What to Consider
To prepare a ceremonial cacao drink:
1) Combine about 25 cacao discs with a touch of sweetener (or drink pure).
2) Add 3/4 cup (6oz) hot water, tea, or mylk (~180F).
3) Use a blender or electric frother to mix for 10 seconds.

Especially if you are newer to cacao, we recommend drinking cacao before 2pm, so the theobromine has time to clear your system before you want to sleep.
If you are on antidepressants or anxiety pharmaceutical medications like SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs, the neuromodulators in cacao combined with pharmaceuticals can overload the system and result in a splitting headache. It's best to consult with your physician about possibly reducing your prescription slightly as you introduce cacao.
