Frequently Asked Questions: Ceremonial Cacao as a Coffee Alternative

What is Theobromine in Cacao?

The primary stimulant molecule in cacao is actually theobromine. Ora Cacao has 212mg theobromine per 1oz serving. Theobromine is a mild cardiovascular stimulant, and differs molecularly from caffeine which is a nervous system stimulant. Theobromine is actually blood pressure neutral, because it is also vasodilatory, meaning it relaxes blood vessels simultaneously as stimulating increased blood flow. The improved circulation from cacao is excellent for cardiac health, and improves absorption of the nutrients in cacao and any superfoods it is paired with.

Theobromine gives a long lasting, gentle, embodied energy without any sort of jitters or crash, even for sensitive people. Overall, theobromine is only about one quarter as stimulating as caffeine, and it's half-life is roughly 7-10 hours vs. 3–5 hours for caffeine, meaning it's effect on the body is softer and longer for sustained energy.

Does ceremonial cacao have caffeine?

Yes — ceremonial cacao contains caffeine, but significantly less than coffee. A standard 1oz / 28g serving of Ora Cacao carries approximately 36mg of caffeine, compared to 80–100mg in a typical cup of coffee. Cacao's natural fat (cacao butter, which makes up about 50% of the bean) slows caffeine absorption into the bloodstream, softening the onset and extending the arc. It may sound like a lot, but 1mg of caffeine in cacao is not at all equivalent to 1mg of caffeine in coffee, because cacao has many other compounds that balance and down-regulate the caffeine.

The more significant stimulant in cacao is actually theobromine — 212mg per serving — which stimulates the cardiovascular system rather than the central nervous system, producing a gentler, more sustained energy without the spike or crash which caffeine alone tends to cause.

When should I drink cacao?

You can fully or partially substitute your cup of coffee with a cup of cacao. If you are new to cacao we recommend drinking it before 2pm so that the stimulant effect has time to clear before you need to sleep. You can drink it daily, unlike the depleting properties of coffee it's super healthy for you.

How do you prepare ceremonial cacao?

The preparation is simple: put your cacao discs in hot (not boiling) water, using approximately 0.8oz-1oz (23g-28g) per 6oz of liquid. Whisk or blend to create a frothy texture. Many people add a pinch of cayenne, cinnamon, or a small amount of natural sweetener, though pure ceremonial cacao is complete on its own. Prepare it with attention and intention — the quality of your presence during preparation is part of the ceremony itself.

What is the difference between ceremonial cacao and cacao powder?

Ceremonial cacao and cacao powder both come from the same cacao bean, but are processed very differently. Cacao powder is made by mechanically pressing out the natural fat (cacao butter), leaving behind a dry powder often treated with alkaline agents (a process called dutching) that removes many of the beneficial compounds. Ceremonial cacao is a whole-food product — nothing is added or removed from the cacao bean, so it retains its natural fat content of 45–55% cacao butter, along with the full spectrum of bioactive compounds.

    My New Ritual

I needed to drastically reduce my coffee intake.... the research pointed me towards cacao as an energizing and mood boosting alternative. I did not realize this was the ritual I needed in my life. I only need one cup and I feel ready for my day... coffee always woke me up but left me wanting more and more throughout the day. Still loving coffee but as a treat instead of a constant.

    LOVE

I've stopped drinking coffee as it's really quick hard hitting energy makes me more so jittery and then falls off. So replacing this with cacao has made a massive difference in my everyday life. This is the highest quality cacao I've had. Cacao gives me a real loving, subtle, flow of consistent energy for the day and all the benefits that come with drinking it.

    Bye Bye Coffee

I just switched cold turkey from a 3 or 4 cup coffee habit to a single cup of cacao each morning. Taking a moment for thought and gratitude really makes the morning better. No jittery-ness or snarky-ness from the coffee. I'm amazed that it was so easy to switch. I have no desire for coffee now. And the ethics and care given by Ora is wonderful.
