Hi, I'm Jonas, Founder of Ora Cacao
After roasting cacao beans on an open fire, hand peeling them beneath a sacred mountain, and grinding them to paste with stones under the guidance of a Zapotec elder in Oaxaca in 2012, I couldn’t stop thinking about cacao.
There was a wild essence to the cacao that I had never felt from chocolate before. An aliveness and a spirit. That’s why I started Ora Cacao, inspired by the wisdom of ancient traditions in which cacao was revered as a medicine and treated with love, care, and integrity.
The truth is, cacao can be life changing. Its mood boosting compounds can alleviate depression and anxiety, its gentle stimulating effect can reduce or replace coffee, and it can be a beautiful way to find greater meaning through ritual.
We built our own cacao factory so that we could stay true to our values and make the best pure 100% cacao available. Today Ora Cacao stewards direct trade relationships with thousands of small farmers so we can buy regeneratively farmed and ethically sourced cacao. How is cacao different from coffee?
Cacao provides gentle, sustained energy - no more jitters or crashes. Contains 212mg of Theobromine, the primary stimulant in cacao, which stimulates the heart and relaxes blood vessels and supports the cardiovascular system by producing an effect of 30-40% higher blood circulation. High in key minerals and nutrients like magnesium, chromium, copper, calcium, manganese, zinc, sulfur, and iron.
Also, it tastes like pure chocolate, not coffee.
Does cacao have caffeine?
We’ve tested our cacao and it has 36 mg of caffeine per 1 oz serving, or about 1/3 of what a regular cup of coffee has. It sounds like a lot, but 1mg of caffeine in cacao is not equivalent to 1mg of caffeine in coffee, because cacao has many other compounds that balance and down-regulate the caffeine.
One of these key compounds is cacao butter, which is 50% of the cacao itself. This healthy natural fat slows down the absorption of caffeine into your body (very similar to a bullet proof coffee).
How do you source your ceremonial cacao?
We buy from small family farms practicing regenerative, organic agroforestry. Our small team travels to each of the cacao communities that we source from to establish reciprocal, long-term relationships that result in thriving for all. Our social impact model pays farmers some of the highest prices for cacao in each country that we source from, and produces premium quality organic cacao.
When should I drink cacao?
You can fully or partially substitute your cup of coffee with a cup of cacao. If you are new to cacao we recommend drinking it before 2pm so that the stimulant effect has time to clear before you need to sleep. You can drink it daily, unlike the depleting properties of coffee it's super healthy for you
How do I prepare cacao?
To prepare a ceremonial cacao drink:
1) Combine about 25 cacao discs with a touch of sweetener (or drink pure).
2) Add 3/4 cup (6oz) hot water, tea, or mylk (~180F).
3) Use a blender or electric frother to mix for 10 seconds.

*** You can also add cacao to your coffee to make a delicious mocha (in case you have no intention of getting off coffee but also love cacao)
How does cacao affect mood?
Pure cacao contains beneficial neurotransmitters and neuro-modulators already present in our brain. It also contains reuptake inhibitors that block the pathways that our bodies normally use to break down and recycle these beneficial mood altering molecules, so the good mood lasts for longer. In the long term, cacao can have therapeutic health benefits, including creating new neural pathways that change our daily experience to include more joy, love, and connection.
