If you’ve been working with cacao for a while, you may have experienced the difference in potency when intention is put into how cacao is grown, sourced, and related with. Our Mystic Mushrooms line grew out of that same understanding, with a desire to offer organic, high-quality mushroom powders that are just as intentional and well-sourced, so you can experience their maximum potency.
Our mushrooms are fruiting body only, organically cultivated in their preferred substrates, and 1:1 water extracted for bioavailability, with no grains, fillers, or starches. They’re easy to add directly to your cacao and can be worked with to support immune health, energy, focus, and long-term resilience.
Keep reading for a closer look at why we choose fruiting body mushrooms, how they’re cultivated, and some of our favorite ways to pair them with cacao.

Why We Choose Fruiting Body Mushrooms

Mystic Mushrooms grew out of a very real need. We wanted to find mushrooms that had the same potency as when we decocted wild-foraged mushrooms in our kitchen. Most functional mushroom powders on the market are actually the mycelium instead of the fruiting body, grown in starch like rice instead of their preferred substrates like logs, and grown indoors under artificial lighting instead of outdoors in fresh air and sunshine.
The supplement industry has taken an extractive approach to mushroom cultivation, without taking into account what makes the mushrooms thrive. This means that with many mushroom supplements, you’re consuming a lot of starch and very little of the medicinal properties of the mushrooms.
What we work with instead is the fruiting body. This is the visible mushroom that pops up above ground, where many of the beneficial compounds are concentrated. If you were foraging for mushrooms in the forest, this is the part that you would harvest and consume, not the mycelium.
Technical note for our mushroom aficionados, for our Chaga and Poria mushrooms, we use the sclerotia. Sclerotium is a compact, hardened mass of fungal mycelium that contains stored nutrients, very little water, and a protective outer rind. When Chaga is foraged, it’s the sclerotium that is harvested - a charcoal-like mass, often called a "conk", on living birch trees, that contains all of the therapeutic benefits. Poria doesn’t actually have a traditional mushroom cap and stem. It creates large underground tubers that are actually the sclerotia, that contain the bioactive compounds. That is what we use for Poria in our Prosporous blend.
For us, choosing fruiting body mushrooms, or sclerotia where appropriate, is part of a larger approach to quality: starting with how the mushroom naturally grows and creating the conditions for it to thrive, rather than choosing cultivation methods based primarily on efficiency.
Extraction Method Matters Too
Sourcing is only part of what goes into a high-quality mushroom powder. How the mushrooms are extracted determines how accessible their beneficial compounds are to the body.
That’s why our Mystic Mushrooms are 1:1 water extracted. This gentle process helps make the mushrooms more bioavailable while keeping the whole mushroom intact. Nothing is isolated. Nothing is stripped away.
We see functional mushrooms as living allies rather than ingredients to extract from. That relationship-based approach shapes how they’re prepared and how we choose to work with them.

Working With Cacao & Mushrooms Together
We see mushrooms as allies that can be paired intentionally with cacao, depending on how you want to feel and what you want to support.
Emotional Balance & Relaxation: Reishi + Tantric Rose Blossom
Reishi is one we return to often for its grounding, calming qualities and its role in supporting immune resilience and stress regulation. Paired with Tantric Rose Blossom, the experience becomes softer and more heart-centered, supporting emotional balance and gentle relaxation.
Focus & Creativity: Lion’s Mane + Thriving Tanzania
Lion’s Mane supports cognition and focus, making it a natural mushroom to work with when you’re sitting down to work, study, or create. Paired with Thriving Tanzania, one of our favorite cacaos for focus and study, this combination supports more intentional, focused time.
Vitality & Wellbeing: ProSporous + Boundless Belize
ProSporous brings together a synergistic blend of mushrooms that support the mind, lungs, liver, and skin: Lion’s Mane supports cognition and focus, Cordyceps supports energy and respiration, Poria offers gentle liver and qi support, and Tremella nourishes the skin. Paired with Boundless Belize, this combination supports both physical nourishment and a sense of spaciousness and vitality.
These are some of our favorite pairings, and you’re welcome to experiment with our Mystic Mushroom line and find what pairings work for you. Try different combinations based on what you want to support and the cacao you feel drawn to working with that day.
