Approach Cacao Like a Relationship

When you approach cacao like a relationship, you don’t need to know exactly what you’re going to experience before you drink it. You can set an intention for presence and curiosity, paying attention to how cacao meets you and what wants to emerge in the moment.
Maybe you take your cacao outside and find yourself more aware of the beauty around you, or you notice an emotion arising that you hadn’t been paying attention to before. Part of building a relationship with cacao is giving yourself enough space to experience it without expectation.
That relationship also changes as you change. There may be times when you’re drawn to a fuller cup and want to spend more time with cacao, while other seasons call for a smaller amount or a simpler practice.
Over time, you begin to learn what your own relationship with cacao feels like instead of following someone else’s idea of what it should be. That said, the only aspects of cacao ritual that we do recommend being consistent with are gratitude - this brings you into your heart, intention - to steer your experience, and reciprocity - contemplating how you can give back.

Your Ritual Can Move With You

Cacao ceremony doesn’t have to happen sitting still with your eyes closed. Your ritual might be bringing a thermos of cacao on a bike ride or hike, taking a cup outside for a walk, or sharing cacao with a friend while catching up on what’s happening in your lives.
What matters is the relationship you’re creating with cacao and the presence you bring to the experience. There will be days when sitting down with your cup is exactly what you need, and others when movement, nature, creativity, or connection feels more natural. Allowing your ritual to change gives you space to meet yourself where you are and continue discovering how cacao fits into your life.
You don’t have to follow a script to have a meaningful experience with cacao. Do what you love, bring cacao with you, and see where the relationship goes.
